چکیده

Leachable and dislodgeable arsenic and chromium from CCA (chromated copper arsenate)treated wood were studied to evaluate the fate of these CCA-chemicals and possible human exposures when the chemicals have been released to the environment. To evaluate the leachable component, two full sized decks were constructed. One was made of CCA-treated wood, and the other was made of untreated wood. Rainfall, runoff water from the top surface of the deck, and infiltrated water through 70 cm of soil below the deck had been monitored for 408 days. Soil below the decks was collected 6 months and 13 months after deck installation. The results of the deck monitoring showed that a significant portion of arsenic could be leached to environment during the service life of the CCA-treated wood product when exposed to rainfall. During the monitoring period, the average concentration in the runoff water from the CCA-treated deck was 1,000 ug/L for arsenic and 99 ug/L for chromium. Release of these metals to the surface soil was also observed. The surface arsenic concentrations increased from 4.5 mg/kg for the 6 month soil sample to 11.5 mg/kg for the 13 month sample. The impacts of the releases were also observed in the infiltrated water samples collected

Cleaning-induced arsenic mobilization and chromium oxidation from CCA-wood deck: Potential risk to children.

Concern about children's exposure to arsenic (As) from wood treated with chromated-copper-arsenate (CCA) led to its withdrawal from residential use in 2004. However, due to its effectiveness, millions of American homes still have CCA-wood decks on which children play. This study evaluated the effects of three deck-cleaning methods on formation of dislodgeable As and hexavalent chromium (CrVI) o...

Impact of chromated copper arsenate (CCA) in wood mulch.

The production of landscape mulch is a major market for the recycling of yard trash and waste wood. When wood recovered from construction and demolition (C&D) debris is used as mulch, it sometimes contains chromated copper arsenate (CCA)-treated wood. The presence of CCA-treated wood may cause some potential environmental problems as a result of the chromium, copper, and arsenic present. Resear...

Assessing and managing exposure from arsenic in CCA-treated wood play structures.

BACKGROUND Chromated copper arsenate (CCA)-treated wood has been widely used for outdoor play structures. There is a growing scientific concern about children's exposure to the arsenic that leaches from these structures. The purpose of this study was to measure arsenic from CCA-treated wood play structures owned by the City of Toronto to guide an appropriate exposure reduction strategy. METHO...

Assessment of children's exposure to arsenic from CCA-wood staircases at apartment complexes in Florida.

Arsenic exposure from wood treated with chromated copper arsenate (CCA) remains a concern due to its presence around homes. This study evaluated children's exposure to As from CCA-treated staircases through determination of bioaccessible soil As and measurements of dislodgeable As on hand railings, steps and surfaces of household objects impacted by CCA-wood leachate. Total As concentrations in...

Bacterial Biodegradation of CCA-Treated Waste Wood

As wood treated with chromated copper arsenate (CCA) is removed from service, methods for eliminating toxic metals from the wood are needed. CCA-tolerant bacteria were evaluated for their ability to modify CCA-treated wood. Aerobic bacteria were isolated from a 20-year-old test plot of CCA-treated stakes. Bacteria selected for their ability to grow on nutrient agar containing CCA components, we...
